Why estimate rather than test
A true one-rep max test means grinding out a single maximal lift, which carries real injury risk and needs a spotter, full warm-up and good technique under fatigue. Estimating your 1RM from a lighter set you can control is safer and almost as useful for programming. The relationship between reps and load is predictable enough that a set of, say, five reps reliably points to your single-rep ceiling. That is why coaches use rep-max formulas to prescribe training weights without maxing out every week.
The Epley and Brzycki formulas
This calculator averages two of the most established estimates. The Epley formula is weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30); the Brzycki formula is weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps). They agree closely at low reps and diverge a little as reps climb, so averaging them gives a balanced number. Both are most accurate under about ten reps — beyond that, endurance and technique dominate and the estimate drifts high. For the best reading, use a set of two to six hard but clean reps.
Training with percentages of 1RM
Once you know your 1RM, you can program intelligently. Strength work typically uses 85–95% for low reps; hypertrophy sits around 67–80% for moderate reps; muscular endurance uses under 67% for higher reps. The percentage table here turns your estimated max into concrete working weights. Because a true max varies day to day with sleep, stress and nutrition, treat the percentages as guides and adjust by feel — some sessions the same percentage will move faster than others.

An estimated 1RM is a planning tool, not a number to chase blindly. Warm up thoroughly, keep technique strict, and never sacrifice form to hit a calculated weight. Re-estimate every few weeks from a fresh working set to track progress, and if you do test a true max, build up in small jumps with a spotter.
