KDP hardcovers are case-laminate (printed cover wrapped around stiff boards). The fixed cost is around $6.80 per book before any pages — about $5.80 more than paperback — because of the binding, end papers and cover wrap. The per-page cost is the same as paperback. That means a 300-page black-and-white hardcover prints for about $10.40 versus $4.60 for the paperback version.
Pricing hardcovers profitably
Because of the higher print cost, hardcovers need a list price of at least $19.99–$24.99 in the US to clear a meaningful royalty. The good news: readers expect hardcovers to be expensive, and a $24.99 hardcover signals premium quality. A common indie strategy is to publish all three formats — Kindle at $4.99, paperback at $12.99 and hardcover at $24.99 — letting buyers self-select by perceived value.
When hardcover makes sense
Hardcover sells well in non-fiction (business, self-help, memoirs that buyers want to gift), illustrated children's books and collector editions of fiction series. It rarely outsells paperback in pure genre fiction. Run the calculator for both formats — if your hardcover royalty is at least 2× the paperback royalty, the format is worth offering even at low volume.

Update your A+ Content to feature the hardcover as the premium option, use 'see all formats' to highlight the price ladder and consider hardcover-only bonus content (author note, color insert) to justify the price difference.
